Shops and restaurants in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, were flooded when forecasters failed to predict an overnight storm and didn't issue weather or flood warnings.

Local business owners are furious at North Somerset council's failure to act following a program of investment in new sea defences.

But a spokesperson highlighted the dangers of relying solely on weather warnings, and said that the council be using more localised information in future and reviewing its procedures to improve preparedness for future events.
