Catalyst has been responsible for assisting well over 300 Engineers and their families with the move to New Zealand. Part of this move can be to introduce Engineers to the New Zealand Chapter of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Presently the ICE has around 600 members in NZ and that number is growing. The well developed engineering sector and unrivalled life style opportunities have seen an increasing number of younger engineers make the move to this side of the world, either as a career move or as a life style choice.
The objective for the New Zealand branch of ICE is to support and promote the international strategy of ICE within New Zealand. The international strategy is set out on the ICE web site.
The strategy for the branch of ICE is to support those members of ICE who reside temporarily or permanently in New Zealand who wish to maintain links with ICE in the United Kingdom.
ICE aims to undertake the strategy by ICE New Zealand:
Economic slowdown, large parts of our world in turmoil and the effects of global warming: there is a silver lining. These are all reasons why moving to New Zealand has never been a better option!
As in many parts of the world, 2010 was a tough year for Kiwis. But unique to the New Zealand population is the fact that they live in one of the world's safest, most peaceful and stunningly beautiful countries. These positive factors, combined with the entrepreneurial spirit of the country's overwhelmingly migrant nature, means it remains one of the top three living destinations in the world.
New Zealand has been described as a 'paradise' by British expats who moved here for a warmer climate and cheaper cost of living.
A NatWest International bank survey of more than 2000 British immigrants living in 12 countries found that Britons in New Zealand rated the country highly in all areas. In the quality-of-life index, New Zealand came ahead of Canada, which topped the poll last year.
Respondents said NZ had one of the lowest average property prices in the developed world, and many cited lower taxes than in Britain (33% top level income tax, no stamp duty, 15% VAT equivalent), a better quality of life and less stress as benefits. A favourable tax regime meant that although average wages were lower, earnings went further.
NatWest International personal banking head Dave Isley said expats reported they were living healthier lifestyles while benefiting financially. The average salary in New Zealand was NZ$28,427, compared with NZ$65,841 in Britain, but the average cost of a home was only NZ$293,000, compared with NZ$592,000 in Britain. In both countries an average property cost the equivalent of roughly 10 years' wages, but Britons who sell their houses find themselves with much more cash in hand when arriving in New Zealand. (Catalyst reckons the average professional salary is around $92,000)
Despite the global slowdown affecting everyone, the potential to earn more money abroad is clearly one of the main benefits expats are experiencing.
